Just Forget It — 8/23/2011

By Joe P Hasler —

If you saw what I saw yesterday at Old Trafford, then I think we can all agree the last thing Sir Alex Ferguson needs at the moment is more depth in the creative department. Before Manchester United and Spurs kicked-off on ESPN yesterday, Ian Darke showed his American viewers the backpage of an English newspaper featuring speculation and unsourced insider information on Wesley Sneijder’s on-again/off-again transfer from Inter Milan to Man U. Apparently, before the start, it was back on track. After watching United torment poor (literally) Tottenham Hotspur, though, you must imagine the deal is well and truly off now.

Unlike Roberto Mancini, who continues to crow about “1 or 2 more players” in spite his already talent laden roster, Sir Alex switched out of buying mode sometime in July. By August he already had his new stars in training camp, and he was clearly indicating that he didn’t intend to spend any more money on new talent.

“I’m certainly not looking to add to that,” he said on August 18. “I’ve been saying that for weeks but you [the media] have all been writing differently – that I’m going to buy this one or that one. ”

Then he added: “You can forget anyone you like…I’m happy with the young players I’ve got.”

Maybe it was just gamesmanship. Sir Alex Ferguson didn’t want to tip his hand in allegedly ongoing Wesley Sneijder talks. I suppose he might just lie straight to the faces of fans and journalists. He doesn’t like journalists much anyway. Although it’s equally possible that he spends his days watching this current batch of Red Devils, and thus is fully aware that they are capable of doing this:
